3 things you can do when you cannot stop overthinking a conversation you already had when you keep replaying it, rewriting your lines, wondering how you came across, analyzing the pause before they answered. The conversation ended hours ago and your brain is still in the room. Researchers call this post event processing and there is a specific reason it happens and specific things that.Here is what is going on. After any socially significant interaction, your brain runs a review to check your standing in the group. It is looking for errors so it can correct them next time. Useful in principle. The problem is that the review has no natural stopping point because the information that would close it, what the other person actually thought, is permanently unavailable to you. So the loop cannot resolve. It just keeps running, and each pass adds detail your brain invents rather than remembers. Here is what actually stops it.
The first is to write the conversation down as it actually happened, just the facts, what was said, in order, without interpretation. This works because rumination runs on vagueness. Each replay drifts further from the real event and further into imagined interpretation. Writing what was actually said forces your brain to confront how thin the evidence for your catastrophic reading really is. The loop feeds on ambiguity. Specificity starves it.
The second is to name what you are actually seeking. Say it out loud. I wanna know that they still like me. I wanna know I did not embarrass myself. Underneath post event processing, there is always a reassurance you are trying to extract from a source that cannot give it. Naming the actual want interrupts the loop because you can see plainly that no amount of replaying will produce it.
And the third is to give your brain the closure it needs from your side. One sentence out loud. I said what I said with the information I had at the time. This is a completion. Signal and your brain responds to completion signals even when the situation is not objectively complete. You are not deciding the conversation went well. You are telling your brain the review is over, the conversation ended when it ended, your brain just never got the message.
Θέλεις να σου προτείνω και μια σύντομη «φόρμουλα» τσέπης (π.χ. 3 προτάσεις) που μπορείς να χρησιμοποιείς επιτόπου την επόμενη φορά που ξεκινήσει ο βρόχος;
