Psychotherapist in private practice
This is a phenomenon I have had different wealthy patients over the years struggle with. As their income went up, at a certain point something seemed to go wrong.
Hedonistic treadmill is a theory which states, as a person makes more money, expectations and desires rise in tandem, which results in no permanent gain in happiness.
What is needed, which many of the wealthy seem to miss, is to start having an inclusion process, not survival mentality. Our poster children for that right now are Warren Buffet and Bill and Melinda Gates. The ones lavishly spending on themselves have become addicts trying to buy worth or value because if they don't possess it, they are worthless. It will never be enough. We have poster children for that too. They are in the news also and despite the glitter, are known to be self-serving and ego driven souls.
I have included one of my charts from my book which illustrates this.
